Anti-Bullying Week 2019

This week we have been promoting anti-bullying at Richard Whittington Primary School. We have had all of our assemblies on this subject and have had numerous lessons on what bullying means, what we do if we think we are being bullied and who we should speak to.

Year 5 and 6 at Barnardo's

From Tuesday 19th to Thursday 21st, Year 5 and 6 visited Barnardo’s charity to help raise money for children in need across the UK. As part of our London topic we researched the history of Barnardo’s and created leaflets to politely inform the public of the vital work Barnardo’s have done and will continue to do for many years to come.

At the pop-up shop we sold a wide array of second-hand items we donated, as well as scrumptious confectionaries. We held collection tins accepting any donations from 5p to £20. Overall we had a fantastic experience and learnt many valuable life skills as well as helping an admirable charity.

Environmental Review
In the future we will be applying for an official ‘Eco-Schools’ Green Flag Award. Firstly in order to achieve our Bronze, we needed to set up a council, meet regularly, conduct an environmental review and create an Action Plan. We independently conducted our environmental review which covered 10 focus areas. It helped to highlight our schools current achievements, and next steps for improvement. This then forms our Action Plan! We have realised that we have now achieved enough to be awarded a Bronze Award, which we will be applying for soon!

Remembrance Day

Today we had a thought-provoking assembly for Remembrance Day. We spoke about the reasons behind this special event and the huge courage and sacrifices that the soldiers of World War 1 demonstrated.
We read ‘Where The Poppies Now Grow’ by Hilary Robinson and Martin Impey which allowed us to appreciate all the people who were involved in the Great War. The children were highly respectful during the minute’s silence and were able to reflect on the purpose of remembrance.

Sport Partnership Autumn 1

We have had a fantastic half term of sporting achievements! We took part in the Year 5 and 6 tag rugby competition on the 3rd October where the children were undefeated, drawing only one game. Yesterday two teams participated in the partnership hockey tournament. The ‘plate’ team did brilliantly to get all the way to the semi-finals and the ‘cup’ team took one step further getting to their final and coming second overall out of 32 teams. Superb! As well as the winning element we are especially proud of the pupils for their sportsperson ship. They showed superb comradery amongst themselves and also shook hands and congratulated the other teams they played. They were a credit to us all! Well done!

Ancient Egypt Day

Wellington, Doha and Cairo Class enjoyed a fantastic day learning about Ancient Egypt. They dressed up as Ancient Egyptians, served as workers and slaves finishing the construction of the city and they completed important tasks in ancient Egyptian culture, including embalming, tomb painting and amulet making. Thank you to all the parents who supported the event, it is very much appreciated!
